Find Your Magic

Essentials for Energetic Grounding + Protection

With Scorpio season upon us and the veil between worlds beginning to thin, there’s no better time to talk about grounding and protecting your energy—not just for magical workings, but for everyday life.

Whether you’re new to spiritual practices or deeply on your path, staying grounded and energetically protected can make a huge difference in how you feel and interact with the world. You guys really connected with my last reel on this topic, so I thought, why not go even deeper.

So today I’m sharing some unique and powerful tools to keep your energy balanced and protected, and there might even be a few that surprise you. Each of these methods has its own purpose, but together, they create a solid energetic toolkit you can rely on. Let’s get into it.

1. Stones + Jewelry (for grounding and absorbing negative energy)

First, let’s talk about protective stones and their properties. What fascinates me most about crystals is that, while some people see them as ‘woo-woo,’ there are actually many real-life examples of the power that stones, crystals, and minerals hold. In fact, their spiritual and symbolic properties often come from practical uses throughout history. Take obsidian, for instance—a protective stone known for its strength and sharp edges. Historically, obsidian was used to craft arrowheads and tools, making it both a physical and energetic protector. When you carry an obsidian stone, you’re channeling that same strength and defense.

Other great protective stones include tiger’s eye, black tourmaline, and hematite. Since these stones are connected to the Earth element, they have an absorbing quality, pulling in and transmuting negative energy, just as the earth naturally does. This effect is particularly strong with darker stones, like black tourmaline, which act as powerful shields against unwanted energy.

Another powerful way to use protective stones is by incorporating them into your jewelry. Recently, I noticed I was feeling drained after readings, and I realized I needed an energetic buffer. I remembered some advice from a tarot reader who used a hematite ring during sessions; as soon as they put it on, they felt a protective barrier go up, which they could take down simply by removing it. Since then, I’ve been using this approach myself with this bracelet set, and I find it incredibly effective. To keep protective jewelry strong, I recommend cleansing it regularly—try placing it under moonlight or even burying it in the earth for a temporary reset.

Lately I’ve been wearing a Protection set from a brand called Otter Spirit. Each piece is crafted with clear intention, which really enhances its effectiveness. The set combines black tourmaline to absorb and transmute energy, hematite to keep you grounded, and lava rock for balance. I wear it for all my readings, and honestly, I don’t leave the house without it! They have pieces not just for protection, but for heightening intuition, creativity, confidence, and even gemstone pieces based on your zodiac sign. 2. Sound + Vibration (Dispels energy +cleansing)

Next, let’s dive into the power of sound and vibration. Sound, especially when used with intention, has an incredible ability to shift energy and clear away stagnation. Different tools—like bells, gongs, clapping, chanting, and even knocking on wood—each create vibrations that help dispel negative energy and establish a protective barrier around you.

In fact, sound vibrations resonate through our environment and bodies, breaking up stagnant energy and restoring flow. This principle is even used in sound therapy, where specific frequencies are applied to encourage physical and emotional healing. Bells and gongs, for instance, create harmonics that are believed to cleanse and balance a space, while chanting helps calm the nervous system, aligning mind and spirit.

The act of knocking on wood, on the other hand, is rooted in ancient beliefs. It was thought that trees were home to protective spirits or gods, and by knocking, you could call on them for guidance or assistance. This tradition of ‘knocking’ can even be applied to your Tarot deck; giving it a gentle knock before or after a reading helps clear away residual energy and reset its vibration for the next session.

When you bring sound into your practice, you’re not just using noise—you’re harnessing ancient methods of energy clearing that continue to resonate with us today.

        3. Mantras (Work to initiate change)

We’ve all heard of mantras and affirmations, but did you know that using a rhyming mantra specifically engages multiple parts of your brain—memory, emotion, and focus? The rhythm of a rhyme helps you enter a flow state, where your conscious mind relaxes and your subconscious takes over, aligning you more deeply with the intention you’re setting.

Rhyming mantras are particularly effective for protection because they focus your mind, calm your nervous system, and keep you grounded in your intention. Here’s a mantra I created for reclaiming your energy and repelling negativity. You can repeat this anytime you need to clear your space or recharge:

‘My energy is mine to keep,
I reclaim it strong and deep.
          Negativity, you must depart,
I shield my soul, protect my heart.’

As you repeat this, imagine a protective bubble forming around you, reclaiming your energy and keeping negativity at bay. And remember, you can always create your own personalized mantras—just let the rhythm guide you as you build a powerful affirmation that resonates with your unique energy and needs.

          4. Smoke (cleansing + purifying)

Smoke cleansing is an ancient practice with both spiritual and scientific benefits. Burning herbs like cedar, pine, rosemary, lavender, or resins like frankincense, not only fills the space with protective energy but also purifies the air by killing bacteria—one reason it was a go-to method of cleansing in ancient cultures. Even smoking foods is a practice rooted in bacterial prevention.

When we burn herbs like blue sage, cedar, or frankincense, we release negative ions—similar to those found near waterfalls and beaches—that can boost mood, neutralize stress, and purify the air by reducing airborne bacteria. This practice combines the elements of air and fire, bringing together clarity, transformation, and protection, while symbolizing a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. Across cultures, smoke has been viewed as a way to carry prayers and intentions upward, releasing what no longer serves us and inviting fresh energy into our spaces. So when you’re smoke cleansing, you’re not only cleansing energetically; you’re engaging in a centuries-old ritual that physically, mentally, and spiritually purifies.

When you smoke cleanse, always keep the windows open. Think of it like sweeping dust out the door; if the windows are closed, the negative energy you’re clearing has nowhere to go. Allowing an exit for this energy is key to completing the cleansing process. And, as with any practice involving fire or smoke, always use caution: never leave burning items unattended, and ensure everything is fully extinguished once you’re done.

            5. Salt (Creates a physical barrier + purifying)

Similar to the history of smoking foods to preserve them, another antibacterial magic mineral is Salt. Scientifically, salt is cleansing because it’s a natural desiccant, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. This can reduce humidity, which inhibits bacterial and mold growth. Salt also has antimicrobial properties; it disrupts the cellular balance of bacteria and fungi, effectively killing them.

Another reason salt is so powerful is because it also contains negative ions. Negative ions are known to neutralize positive ions—those are the ions often associated with pollution, dust, and even stress. When you sprinkle salt, it creates a cleansing effect that helps clear out stagnant, negative energy, purifying the space around you.

It’s common to place salt bowls around rooms, sprinkle it at entry points, or dissolve it in water for cleansing effects. Which, brings me to my next topic.

              6. Water (Cleansing / nourishing / creates a spiritual / emotional barrier)

Water is a powerful element known for its ability to cleanse, nourish, and protect, serving as both a physical and spiritual barrier. Scientifically, water conducts energy, making it effective for grounding practices that wash away negativity and restore balance. This quality is also why even a simple hand rinse or misting can refresh our energy field. For instance, Using Florida water, a traditional blend of botanicals, is a deeply rooted practice for cleansing both ourselves and our spaces. You can use it as a witchy hand sanitizer, or add it to your floor wash or use it to wipe down countertops or sacred items. I use a body/room spray that’s infused with sacred herbs like palo santo to an added layer of protection and purification. In the South, painting porch ceilings light blue symbolically represents water, which is thought to block spirits from crossing into the home. Integrating water elements into your energetic practice—whether through mists, ritual washes, or symbolic colors—enhances a sense of spiritual and emotional protection, creating a grounded, balanced environment for well-being.

You can also program your shower or bath with intention, as water is believed to hold memory. Beyond physical cleansing, water is an energetic medium that can be ‘charged’ with your thoughts, affirmations, or visualizations. Studies even suggest that water molecules may structure themselves uniquely in response to words, emotions, and sounds. By setting an intention before you step into the shower or bath—whether it’s to release negativity, invite calm, or restore balance—you can use water as a conduit for renewal. Imagine each drop carrying away what no longer serves you, surrounding you with protective, cleansing energy that aligns with the memory of your intention, so you emerge refreshed and grounded.

                7. EFT Tapping (Actively process a negative emotion)

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) tapping is a powerful tool for actively processing negative emotions, allowing you to release stress, fear, or overwhelm in real time. By tapping gently on specific acupressure points—like the side of the hand, collarbone, or under the eye—while focusing on an emotion, you help the body and mind to regulate, clear emotional blocks, and restore calm. For example, if you’re feeling anxious, you might tap while saying, “Even though I feel anxious right now, I deeply and completely accept myself.” This simple process interrupts the stress response and reinforces positive beliefs. If you need guidance, you can use tools like ChatGPT to help create a custom tapping script tailored to your needs, making it easy to follow along as you tap through emotions and return to a balanced state.  Since I started this practice, I was blown away by how effective it is.  Something about accessing those acupressure points is kind of like a secret cheat code to help your body physically process emotions, accessible literally whenever you need it.

So, there you have it—seven powerful tools to help you stay grounded, protected, and in control of your energy. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or you’ve been practicing for a while, each of these techniques offers something unique, allowing you to find what resonates most with your own energy and needs.

Remember, grounding and protection aren’t just for specific moments—they’re practices that can support you every day. Try incorporating a few of these methods, experiment with what feels right, and trust your intuition as you build a routine that keeps you balanced and empowered.
